I don't know the exact circumstances but hang in there I say. It's easier said than done, but I think if this is really what you want in the long run, then it makes the work, the waiting, worthwhile.
I have been through the process. Not sure if the experience is really worth it. At the end of the day, it boils down to why-you-need-to-see-the-end-of-your-PhD. For me, the greatest motivation is the chance to come back to Singapore to see my family.
Other than that, you need support. Many graduate students came with their family. Having a "real" support group and a fantastic group of graduate friends would help. But I think many graduate students are too introverted or stubborn to admit they need a teeny weeny bit of help from all of us.
